Immune Therapy for Long-Term Allergy Relief
Immune therapy (also immunotherapy) is the only allergy treatment that offers long-term relief from allergy symptoms. After your allergy testing is complete, we will let you know which allergy treatment we recommend to relieve your symptoms. We offer two types of immunotherapy treatments in our office: allergy shots and a sublingual therapy called SLIT therapy.
Immunotherapy Injections for Allergy Relief
The purpose of immunotherapy is to desensitize your body to the allergens that cause your immune system to react. This is done by giving allergy shots: injections that contain pure, diluted concentrations of pollens and other allergens. The doses are increased slowly over time, so that your immune system safely becomes desensitized to the allergens. You then have less chance of allergic reaction.
At Anderson Allergy & Asthma, we do not rely solely on pre-mixed concentrations. We mix our own treatments for hay fever and other allergies on a per-patient basis.
You can expect your immune therapy to require a visit to the allergy clinic weekly at first, then every 2 weeks, 3 weeks, and finally once per month. The average person can expect this allergy treatment to remain effective for 10 to 15 years after the allergy shots have been stopped.
SLIT Therapy for Needle-Less Allergy Treatment
Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT Therapy) involves putting drops of allergen extracts under your tongue. SLIT drops have been used in Europe for over 40 years. They have a long record of safe and effective use by allergy sufferers. In fact, research has shown that this sublingual therapy is just as effective for symptom reduction as allergy shots.
For more information about this particular immune therapy option, go to our SLIT therapy page. We will help you determine which allergy treatment is right for you.
